ยางามิ ไลท์ นักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยหัวดีอันดับหนึ่งของประเทศได้ไปพบ "บันทึกมรณะ" (เดธโน้ต) ของ ลุค ยมทูตผู้หนึ่งได้ทำให้ได้รับความสามารถพิเศษสามารถฆ่าคนได้ เพียงแค่รู้จักหน้าคนผู้นั้นแล้วเขียนชื่อลงไปในกระดาษของสมุดบันทึกเล่มนั้น โดยผู้ที่ถูกเขียนชื่อจะเกิดอาการหัวใจวาย เสียชีวิตภายในเวลา 40 วินาที ไลท์จึงตัดสินใจจะเปลี่ยนแปลงโลก โดยใช้เดธโน้ตฆ่าอาชญากร ผู้คนจึงขนานนามของผู้ฆ่า (ไลท์) ว่า "คิระ"
